Buy your Mattress with Confidence: Tips for Mattress Shopping

Buy your Mattress with Confidence

It’s smart to consider mattress shopping similar to car shopping. For 10 to 15 to 20 years, you’ll be sleeping on your mattress, so it’s important to not only consider your needs are today, but also things you may need years down the line. Whether it’s a firmness level, size, or one of numerous other elements that make up a mattress, you need to consider possible life changes and other items at least 5 years down the line.

Aside from this, here are a few other items to consider when purchasing a mattress.

Have No Shame

When shopping for a mattress, don’t be bashful about lying down on a mattress for an extended period of time. Often times the salesperson will tell you to, but if they don’t and you feel rushed in the store, it’s likely best not to buy from that person or store because the salesperson is hiding something. Don’t feel self-conscious or let any mattress salesperson hurry you along!

A mattress is a big, life purchase, and if you don’t try it for at least 15 minutes you’re not going to get a real feel for it, which means you won’t know what you’re buying. Also, remember that couples should test out the mattress together when buying.

Consider your Health

If you have a health condition, whether big or small, talk to your doctor or physical therapist about what he or she recommends in your next mattress. They may not have any recommendations, but there’s a chance they’ll be able to suggest a certain type of mattress for you.

Keep in mind that doctors are not mattress experts, but they know your medical condition and their advice should be heeded very seriously.

Be Wary of Gimmicks

When you’re out looking for your next mattress, watch out for labels such as “orthopedic” or “medically-approved,” if you see this, ask about the certification and make sure to listen closely to the salesperson. Sometimes mattress brands will advertise medical-benefits that aren’t in-fact legitimate. You may even see orthopedic-friendly features, but no medical group has verified this.

Consider an Adjustable Base

Adjustable bases for mattresses are the most popular new product in the mattress industry. In fact, if you find that you are more comfortable sitting in a recliner than you are lying down, try an adjustable bed! They’ll help you sleep, plus they’ll make your bed into a much more flexible and versatile household furniture item.

A major health benefit of adjustable mattress bases is that they relieve pressure on the lower back.

Watch for a Warranty

A good mattress will have a minimum of a 10-year full replacement or non-prorated warranty. This is non-negotiable, so you must watch out for it.

When you’re shopping, remember, it’s your mattress, your back, and your money, so it’s worth the time to research it and get the best mattress possible. Keep an eye out for specials and sales, and always try to negotiate delivery charges.
